Restricted Themes and Topics
Within the Alpha Centauri setting and lore there are topics and themes which may be considered distressing or upsetting. We have set out below how we intend to handle these within our game. In some cases we have chosen to exclude the subject matter entirely, for most we have chosen a balance between tastefulness and adherence to the setting.
Storytellers, the NPC cast and players are all required to adhere to these restrictions at all times and in all mediums relating to this game. This includes but is not restricted to: uptime sessions, downtime write-ups, in-person or Discord conversations (IC or OC) and Forum posts. By playing this game, you give your consent to content listed here as well as your agreement to adhere to the restrictions in the way those topics are portrayed.
This list may be updated at any time with new topics as they arise, this will be communicated out via an announcement on Discord where relevant.
-
Including but not limited to: autocratic dictatorships, religious zealotry, extreme capitalism and manipulative propaganda.
Characters may act according to the ideologies they believe in, but some factions may impose punishments for not adhering appropriately to faction ideology
Descriptions of acute ideological expression will feature in downtime
Discussions regarding acute expressions of ideologies will occur in uptime
-
This includes but is not limited to: the backstory in which Earth was lost, and potential future scenarios where Planet Chiron is faced with an apocalyptic threat.
Non-graphic representations of or references to these themes may feature in downtime where appropriate
Discussions about these themes may occur in uptime.
-
This is defined as ‘grotesque and psychologically disturbing violation of the physical body through such things as mutation, disease, mutilation, or transformation’.
Within the setting this may stem from things like badly-implanted cybernetics, mind worms, radiation sickness and other transformations of the human body
Non-graphic descriptions of or references to such things may occur in downtime returns
Discussions regarding such things may occur in uptime

This includes such groups as long-term prisoners, gene-jacked drones and those who have been nerve-stapled.
It will never be possible for a player character to be created as part of one of these groups.
If play progresses such that a player character becomes part of one of these groups, they will be deemed unplayable.
These groups do exist and It will be possible for NPCs to be represented in uptime or downtime as part of one of these groups. Prejudice against them is in-keeping with the theme of some factions.
This treatment must ONLY be IC. OOC discrimination of this type towards those who play such characters is strictly forbidden, even in jest. This includes things such as not calling the player of a prisoner a ‘jailbird’.
-
This includes such groups as cyborgs and the genetically enhanced,
It may eventually be possible for player characters to be created as, or to be adapted through play into, members of one of these groups.
NPCs may be represented in uptime or downtime as members of one of these groups.
A significant part of the story for members of such groups is dealing with those who consider them to be 'other', or 'less than' and treat them accordingly.
This treatment must ONLY be IC. OOC discrimination of this type towards those who play such characters is strictly forbidden, even in jest. This includes things such as not calling the player of a cyborg a ‘clanker’ or a ‘toaster’.
-
This may occur through technologies like nerve stapling, failed/sabotaged memory backups or long-term incarceration.
It will never be possible for a player character to start in this state.
If play progresses such that a player character enters this state, they will be deemed unplayable.
This may be temporary in the case of things like nerve stapling, and the character may return to being playable after a period of time if appropriate.
-
This is an acceptable IC tactic for characters to use on other characters.
However, it is not acceptable for players to use on other players.
Care must be taken to ensure any attempts remain fully within the boundaries of character action.
-
Descriptions of explicit harm to children will not feature in this game.
However, implied harm may feature in a non-graphic manner, for example a downtime return where an entire dome has been destroyed referencing ‘200,000 men, women and children' being lost.
-
Psychic attacks are a core mechanic in the game and characters may be assaulted psychically regardless of whether they venture out exploring or remain within a dome. These can range from 'blunt force' damage to manipulation of emotions and mental states.
Such attacks may influence a character’s behaviour but will not permit complete control of their actions
Psychic attacks may occur in uptime
Non-graphic descriptions of psychic attacks will feature in downtimes where relevant.
Discussions about such attacks will almost certainly occur in uptime.
-
Any consensual sexual behaviour a character participates in will occur out of session.
We are applying a common perception definition rather than a narrow definition based on actual intercourse.
Subject to this limit, participants may simulate romantic or affectionate behaviour between characters in session.
-
Any reference to, description of, implication of or threat of sexual violence is strictly forbidden in any part of the game.
-
Depictions of or references to IC alcoholism or excessive drinking are forbidden.
Controlled depictions of alcohol-use are permitted.
Other depictions of IC substance abuse, such as recreational drug use, may be portrayed.
-
Such things may arise as a result of war or lack of access to resources such as food.
We will never require players to act out scenes of suffering or deprivation in uptime, though they may choose to do so if they wish.
Such things may be described in a non-graphic way in downtime returns.
Discussions regarding suffering and deprivation may occur in uptime.
-
Some technologies may require experimentation on native flora, fauna, and in some cases humans, to progress.
This experimentation may be ethical in nature, or it may not be.
Unethical experimentation will never be required by the game to progress technologies, but as it features significantly in the lore this game is based on it will not be forbidden.
Experimentation on played characters (PCs or NPCs) can only be done with the consent of all the players involved and the STs. If approved, this can only feature in downtime or in private forum threads. The STs reserve the right to revoke approval if things go too far.
Discussions regarding experimentation, ethical or otherwise, may occur in uptime.
-
Including but not limited to: spore launchers, retroviral engineering and planet busters.
Some technologies when developed will allow the creation and/or use of weapons that may be deemed unethical.
The use of such weapons in conflict will be described in a non-graphic manner in downtime returns where relevant.
Discussions about such weapons may occur in uptime.
-
This may be interpersonal, between factions, against native flora and fauna, and other such entities.
There will be no explicit gore or graphic detail described in downtimes, however reference to conflict and non-graphic descriptions of combat will be included where relevant.
Uptime simulation of violence will be handled in accordance with our ‘Dramatic Scene’ mechanics and may be acted-out accordingly by players.
Discussions regarding such conflicts will almost certainly occur in uptime.
